Windstorm Certification for Your Construction Project:

Ongoing vs. Completed

Planning a new construction or renovation in Texas? You may need Windstorm Certification (WC) to secure insurance coverage. Here’s how the certification process varies depending on your project’s stage

Ongoing Construction

(WPI-8 Certificate):

Projects Under Construction: Applicable to any building currently in an active construction phase.
Recently Completed Projects: Ideal for projects finished within the last 6 months.

Benefits:

Streamlined Inspections:

Inspectors can monitor code compliance during each phase, making the process smoother.
Cost Efficiency: Identifying potential code issues early helps avoid costly rework down the line.

How It Works:

  • A TDI-appointed windstorm engineer conducts inspections at key stages throughout construction.
  • Once the project meets all code requirements, a WPI-8 certificate is issued, ensuring compliance and peace of mind.

Completed Construction

(WPI-8-E Certificate):

Fully Constructed Buildings:

This applies to structures completed over 6 months ago, including existing buildings and projects finished more than half a year ago.

How It Works:

  • A Texas-licensed professional engineer conducts a detailed inspection of the completed building.
  • Because the inspection is for a fully constructed structure, the process may take longer and could be more costly.
  • If the building meets all code requirements, the engineer will submit the WPI-8-E certificate to the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) on your behalf.

What is Windstorm Certification?

In hurricane-prone areas of Texas, most construction projects must obtain Windstorm Certification (WC) to qualify for building insurance.

Not all professional engineers (PEs) can perform these inspections. Only those who are specially trained and appointed by the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) are authorized to issue this certification. After a successful inspection, a WPI-8 certificate is issued.

Types of Inspections:

  • Ongoing Construction: Applies to buildings that are not yet built, currently under construction, or completed within the last six months.
  • Completed Construction: Applies to buildings that were completed more than six months ago.

We offer inspection services for both ongoing and completed construction projects.

Insurance Requirements for Windstorm Protection

To insure your home against windstorms, you need a certification from the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI). This involves an inspection by a licensed windstorm engineer, which is essential for residents in Texas areas vulnerable to windstorms, hurricanes, and strong winds. Not all areas in Texas are prone to severe hurricanes, but if you want to purchase insurance, your structure must be inspected by a TDI-certified engineer. After the inspection, TDI will issue a certification (WPI-8), making your property eligible for insurance coverage. Windstorms, including hurricanes, are powerful weather events that can cause significant damage to properties. Therefore, it’s always wise to have your building insured against natural disasters such as high winds and hurricanes.

Benefits of Windstorm Certification

Ensuring the safety of your building against hurricanes is always beneficial, providing peace of mind and financial protection. Windstorm Certification confirms that your property is built to withstand severe weather, reducing the risk of damage and potential repair costs. By obtaining this certification, you not only comply with legal requirements but also enhance the resilience of your property against natural disasters. This proactive measure helps safeguard your investment and ensures the long-term durability of your home.
